Growing philosophy

PictureA beneficial insect taking care of a striped Colorado beetle larva
From our beginnings, our vision for our farm was to create a place in balance with nature, where all beings feel good, a rejuvenating, inspiring and enriching place. Each year, with each principle that we manage to put into practice, this dream materializes and we get closer to our ideologies.

On the farm we follow the principles of agroecology where we look not only at organic vs. conventional, but rather to the system as an entity; soils, biodiversity, community, water, mode of distribution, materials, sustainability, etc.
It is very important for us to continue to improve our systems.

Our decisions are made based on our land and we continue to evolve by observing and listening to nature. We nourish our soil and try as little as possible to disturb the beings who live there by turning the soil as little as possible. Crop rotation, compost additions, green manures, hedges of perennial plants, reduced tillage techniques are some of the practices we use on the farm.

Our history

La Ferme la Belle Besogne was born from a shared passion for living to the rhythm of nature. In search of adventure, we left Vancouver in the spring of 2011 to cultivate a piece of land on the property of the Allain family located in Neguac, NB. This first season was very enriching, the enthusiasm of the people of the community towards our project and the welcome we received from vendors and clients at the market confirmed the need and appreciation for fresh vegetables.

2017 was our first season on our land on McEachern point, located in the community of Tabusintac. This permanence finally makes it possible to invest in more permanent infrastructure after several years of winging it with what we had ;) . One of our greatest sources of motivation has always been the incredible support we received  and continue to receive from the community. Some of our clients have been with us since our very beginning and we are so grateful.

Your farmers

Martin, Venessa, Loïsse and Sorel your farmers, producers of delicious healthy and fresh vegetables.  Our vision for our farm is to create a farm system in harmony with nature.  An inspiring, rejuvenating and enriching place.

Martin Krykorka

The one who is in the field from morning until evening during the production season. Martin is the farmer, the carpenter, the builder, the tinkerer, the artist. His role on the farm extends from soil preparation to the construction of different tools for the farm. Before la Belle Besogne, Martin studied art, he is a painter, illustrator and sculptor. His introduction to farming came when his taste for adventure led him to WWOOF in California.

Off season, Martin returns to the studio. You can follow his Instagram page or visit his website to see his works and his journey as an artist-farmer.

Loïsse

The one that makes us laugh and run.  Loïsse is in charge of quality control, she tastes everything to make sure that the quality is top notch.

Venessa Allain

The one who works full time off the farm, who does some weeding and harvesting in her spare time. Venessa takes care of the planning of the farm. Her role extends from planning crops, rotations, perennial crops, canning and fermenting whatever the farm has a surplus of, to concocting meals on the fly. Venessa is very inspired by what the farm and its environment has to offer, she loves feeding her family and friends with what the land and the sea offer.

Before la Belle Besogne, Venessa studied at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and obtained a B.Sc in Agroecology. In conjunction with her studies, Venessa also deepened her knowledge by working on several organic farms. Her passion for organic farming was born during her first summer of hands-on work at Hazelmere Organic Farm with two of her mentors Gary and Natty King.

Sorel

The one that has just recently set foot in the fields.  We'll see what his future on the farm will hold.  For now he seems to have an interest for eating everything!
